23 december 2020 The Balance Of An Unusual Year Despite the difficulties, the Burgas Opera ends the year with hope

Gone are the last days of 2020 - unusual, unexpectedly displacing all routine and familiar patterns, crisis, stress, challenging - through the impetus to make us rethink the crisis not as a threat but as an opportunity…

And because culture, including classical music, was among those most affected by the "new reality" to which we were forced to adapt quickly so that artists could still carry out their mission - to create and create an aesthetic product, which is the necessary superstructure in our entire life, apart from the vital base in material expression.

After the extremely successful in creative terms for the State Opera - Burgas 2019, the passing 2020 began with a busy program. The orchestra, choir, and ballet of the State Opera - Burgas also took part in the general beautiful amalgam of passions, emotions, colors, dynamic twists, and exciting plot denouement.

Only a day before the presentation of the Broadway musical "Kiss Me, Kate!", With which the troupe of the Burgas Opera raised the audience to its feet at the National Theater - on November 19, 2019, emergency measures were introduced in March and the show did not take place. At the expense of the canceled performances, the director of the Burgas Opera - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev redirected his creative ideas to another field, proving that art could undoubtedly be a social cause - the wardrobes of the State Opera - Burgas: Magdalena Galcheva, Kichka Grozeva, Ivanka Stankova, and Nedka Ivanova, started sewing protective masks instead of costumes for the planned premiere of the ballet "Giselle". In about two and a half months, the seamstresses, under whose deft fingers hundreds of beautiful costumes came out, sewed about 20,000 masks, which were distributed free of charge to health and social institutions, as well as to the administrative sector. The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, in an interview with the Bulgarian National Radio, gave as an example the volunteer activity of the Burgas Opera. Because of this noble initiative, implemented in a timely and entirely charitable manner, Deputy Minister of Culture Rumen Dimitrov presented one of the honorary "Outstretched Hand" awards of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria to costume designers at the State Opera in Burgas. On their behalf, the recognition was given to the director of the Burgas Opera Alexander Tekeliev, who attended the official ceremony on October 12 this year, at the Boyana Residence, Sofia. The Burgas Opera successfully joined the online initiative of the Sofia Philharmonic and the Bulgarian National Radio "Together in Crisis", as the performances broadcast on the online platforms of the State Opera - Burgas were watched over 100,000 times. "This is a homage to our audience! It is impressive that there are more views from abroad. There must be spiritual food and I am glad that this is of interest because these are live performances. I think the initiative is good, we really have what to show, because we record 90% of our production. People should not forget us in such times of crisis as they are now, many do not like culture, but on the other hand, there are those who need it and we do it for them. Artists don't have to lose shape either, rehearsals are done online, but it's not the same and it's not enough. On the plus side, in this complex environment, we can show that our art is not elitist, it has existed for centuries, and not by chance. and with them, until the time of our live meeting comes, because nothing can replace the presence in the hall and the magic of this art seen live ", says in an interview for BNR Alexander Tekeliev, director of the State Opera - Burgas / the interview is from 30/04/2020/

In June, the Opera Hall witnessed the most unusual concert - for its entire existence as a stage factor in Burgas. Conductors, soloists, orchestrators, and audiences were in sync not only with the canons of art and its aesthetic perception but also with the modern new and old precautions, which have been in force since yesterday. It is certainly not easy to listen and shoot with a mask, but it is incomparable with the creative and purely physical effort of the artists on stage, who deserve the most sincere admiration! The chamber concert on June 24, with conductor Tsanislav Petkov, was also with unusual soloists - the young reliable instrumentalists: the violinist Olga Doykova / then 12 years old / and Daria Krasteva, piano, both winners of numerous international and national awards.

On July 7, with the opera "Masked Ball" by Giuseppe Verdi, this year's edition was officially opened on the stage of the Summer Theater - Burgas. The music festival was held for the 13th time, in partnership with the Municipality of Burgas. The title "Masked Ball" is completely in line with the surprising realities of recent months, which have imposed the concept of "mask" in a completely different and much more pragmatic sense. And art is the antithesis of the unflattering facts of life, although it reflects and transforms them. The staging of Verdi's opera, through the innovative directorial decisions of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev unfolded its dramatic brilliance as an analog of the life ball with masks, which contains the whole spectrum of emotions and feelings - tearing doubts, treacherous tendencies, vortex passions, pure love, marked by doom, dramatic denouements. The October program of the Burgas Opera started with "Pinocchio", a musical for children by Alexander Yosifov, a production that is always welcomed with great joy by the youngest spectators and their parents.

Incredible stage magic occurred during the performance of one of the most beautiful musically, as well as the embedded drama of emotion, Puccini's operas - "Bohemia", on October 7, in the Opera Hall. The elusive feeling of electrification of the space between artists, choir, orchestra, conductor, and the audience was palpable. It is this invisible thread that gives rise to the true meaning of art - to give an emotion that we could hardly draw from every day relationships and the world of pragmatics. It was a great performance of Puccini's masterpiece - precisely because of this soldering, in which, figuratively speaking, the spark is transmitted from above to the hall to give impetus to continue to be complete and emotionally complete ... The solo cast of "Bohemia" was conducted by maestro Ivan Kozhuharov, who recently celebrated his 70th birthday. "Bohemia" is undoubtedly his element - as an embedded emotion and a brilliant conductor's interpretation. Memorable and exciting roles were played by Nona Krastnikova, guest tenor Mihail Mihailov, Maria Tsvetkova-Madjarova, Maryan Yovanoski, Diman Panchev. Yordan Hristozov, Kostadin Mechkov, Veselin Hristov, Lyubomir Todorov, Petar Tiholov. All the soloists, orchestrators, and artists-choristers were united by a single feeling of tragic romantic doom, psychological depth, but without unnecessary pathos, embedded in Puccini's score, undoubtedly ingenious. The production of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev completely impresses the semantic and aesthetic points of the composer and libretto, building the characters and weaving them into the action, with the polyphonic skill of the ideas embedded in the layers of plot development / assistant director of the production is Lina Peeva. artist - Radostin Chomakov, conductor of the choir - Nevena Mihaiyova, concertmaster - Yordan Kovachev /. Deserved admiration was given to maestro Ivan Kozhuharov, who traditionally turns every performance under his baton into an event!

On October 18, they fulfilled the allowable capacity / due to health measures / of the Opera Hall, and personally the mayor Dimitar Nikolov presented to the famous violinist Prof. Mincho Minchev, who celebrates his 70th anniversary the biggest award of Burgas - "The Tower Key".

An intriguing program had prepared the Burgas Opera for the chamber concert on November 18. The event was the first of the month after all performances and concerts of the Burgas Opera were temporarily canceled due to the complicated epidemiological situation and illness of some artists, in order to protect the health of the artistic staff and the audience of cultural events.

Performed by the orchestra of the State Opera - Burgas, under the baton of the young conductor, but already with enviable experience behind the counter - Tsanislav Petkov, sounded well-balanced stylistic program, including one work of baroque music, Viennese classicism, and contemporary music from the early XX century. Concertmaster - Vanya Zlateva.

Magnificent emotion was created by the three opera Primas - Maria Tsvetkova-Madzharova, Nona Krasnikova, Ioana Kadiyska, and the pianist Mira Iskarova at the concert performance Primadonna-Donna-Donna !!! - on November 20, in the Opera Hall. The participation of the bass and artistic secretary of the Burgas Opera Delyan Slavov was original, who was in the role of a leading "provocateur", in the positive sense - of the primates, who took part in a noble stage competition in which the only winner was the audience! The concert was nominated for an event in November in the BNT program "Eternal Music", author and host Mario Nikolov, garnering the most votes.

On November 26, the magnificent staging of Prof. Hikmet Mehmedov's "Sleeping Beauty", to the music of PI Tchaikovsky, was finally presented. It has been postponed several times this year due to the difficult situation. Sisters Polina and Ivanina Ivanovi made brilliant debuts / in the roles of Princess Aurora and Fairy Lilac, as well as Frederico Pinto - guest, a premier ballet dancer at the Stara Zagora Opera. All the artists from the ballet ensemble of the Burgas Opera/tutor Galina Kalcheva / were wonderful, who created a real fairytale extravaganza on the stage.

On the evening of November 27 in the Opera Hall you will receive Edelina Kaneva and Nona Krastnikova, together with Mira Iskarova - on the piano, Rositsa Toncheva - double bass, Patrick Konov - trumpet and Kiro Ivanov - drums, again showed and proved that musicians with serious training and established aesthetic criteria of the classical school, they could fulfill practically everything, as they have the intelligent artistic presence and a tangible accumulated aesthetic-conceptual background - with the concert performance "Swing Classic".

Thanks and applause - for the eventful year, despite the objective difficulties, deserve the director of the Burgas Opera - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev. for his foresight and human approach, the artistic and administrative staff, technical services and all professionally connected with the Burgas cultural institution, invested energy and heart in creating the most complex performing arts, eclectically combining different aspects of creativity!

These are just a glimpse of what happened on the Burgas stages and the scenes in other cities in Bulgaria for the difficult year 2020. Many productions and concerts enjoyed the attention of the audience and were duly appreciated, many performances were canceled or postponed for better times. The important thing is that art proves to be alive, even in moments of unprecedented challenges.

We hope that in difficult times, such as the current ones, classical music will continue to give loyal art lovers moments of contact with harmony, positivism, and a bright beginning in life, as a counterbalance to fear and despair. We all hope for calmer days, in which art could, without fear, be a fundamental source of Good and Hope, of Harmony and Beauty!

We are waiting for you, dear fans of classical music, in the next 2021 as well, because without you, the audience, art cannot exist and have its unique and inimitable influential and reviving power! ...

We wish you a better, healthier, calmer, more smiling, more beneficial New Year, and may the Music continue to be with you, with us, and with all those who have chosen to be faithful to it!

Thank you - for the presence of our performances, for the positive feedback and support!
