09 june 2025 Music by Piazzolla Will Be Performed On Wednesday

For lovers of strong passions, dizzying musical motifs, subject to the South American temperament, and the characteristic emotionality of tango is “Piazzolla – the last concert!...” – on June 11, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in the hall of the State Opera – Burgas. The soloist of the concert will be Stoyan Karaivanov, bandoneon, under the direction of Prof. Deyan Pavlov, who is a frequent and desired guest conductor on the Burgas stage, as well as at events of the State Opera – Burgas on tour.

The bandoneon is the favorite instrument of Stoyan Karaivanov, winner of the prestigious “Musician of the Year” 2022 award in the poll of the “Allegro Vivace” program of the “Horizont” program of the Bulgarian National Radio. He is also the winner of a series of awards from national and international accordion and bayan competitions. The young musician is the first Bulgarian bandoneon player to play the classical Argentine system. He was awarded an honorary diploma for high performing mastery by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is the first musician of the young generation to have performed the entire work of Astor Piazzolla for bandoneon and orchestra, including the legendary program "Piazzolla - the Last Concert", which repeats the composer's last concert in Athens, July 3, 1990, in Athens, Greece.

The attractive musical and stage project is another aesthetic challenge in the summer program of the Burgas Cultural Institute, which combines different musical genres, presented through various means of expression. The musical motifs that will be heard at the concert on Wednesday have woven into themselves the charge of the original taste for life, characteristic of South America, as well as the attitude to the emotional interaction in the dance of a man and a woman, which reflects a universe of feelings, beauty of movements, rhythms in the overtones of passion... Tango is a popular genre in art - there are different directions: tango music, tango poetry, and tango dance. It arose in the second half of the 19th century among the common people in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. Over time and with its improvement, it gained a higher social status and immense popularity on several continents. Tango is a philosophy, a specific worldview, expressed through the tonality of sensuality and a whirlpool of emotions. Maestro Astor Piazzolla is recognized in the history of music as a renewer of Argentine tango, uniquely elevating it from "street music" to music performed in concert halls. According to experts, his work is accessible to both connoisseurs of the classics, who are distinguished by refined taste, and to fans of other musical genres.

The concert program, with the same soloist and conductor, was presented to a full house and an enthusiastic audience on November 24, 2022, and last summer, Stoyan Karaivanov performed the "Tango Classics" program at St. Anastasia's Church, with a chamber string ensemble and piano.

Emotion – in all its nuances, filigree technique, and most of all – spirit embodied in the musical text, will be demonstrated again on June 11 in the Opera Hall – both the soloist and all the musicians of the Burgas Opera Orchestra with concertmaster Hristo Belchev, led by maestro Deyan Pavlov.

On Wednesday, the exceptional pianist Iliana Todorova, who has performed with great success on stages in different continents, will be at the piano. She will be in complete artistic synchrony with the soloist and the musicians. The orchestra – touch, percussion instruments and harp, will be in one breath with the phrasing, the invested feeling, and the general radiance of the soloist Stoyan Karaivanov, who through sounds, brilliantly constructed dynamics, and an embedded soul in the interpretation, will tell stories, will immerse those present in reflection.

The concert will be of an undeniably high level – as a psychological study of soul transformations, as dramatic feelings woven into a musical-poetic text, as symbolism containing all the collected pain of human nature, an uplifting impulse and subsequent tragedy, combining holiness and sin, pain and sweetness, rage and life-giving hope, which, however, contains the outlines of inner devastation. Those present in the Opera hall on June 11 will follow in complete emotional synchrony, the musical and philosophical messages of the works. The trajectory of the emotional will pass through various nuances – from the nostalgic extension of sadness in biblical dimensions, to the highest degree of sensuality, embodied in the musical text, recreated by the amazing timbre diversity of the bandoneon, whose sound the conductor Deyan Pavlov likened to an organ during one of the rehearsals. After the memorable first concert in the Opera House hall in November 2022, Stoyan Karaivanov did not hide his excitement: "This is my first time in Burgas and I am pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome, by the audience, the organization, by everything! Thank you, and I hope this is not our only meeting! I also want to congratulate the exceptional musicians from the orchestra! And this will happen on June 11.

The young musician exudes maturity and philosophical depth uncharacteristic of his age in his interpretation of Piazzolla, genuine class, and an exceptionally strong spiritual charge.

The concert program will feature: "Tres Tangos" for bandoneon and orchestra - uniquely presented tango rhythms, containing the entire spectrum of sensuality; "Adios Nonino" - a work, an emanation of filial love and worship of the role and symbolism of the father figure, imbued with the pain of losing the composer's father; "Aconcagua" - Concerto for bandoneon and orchestra - just as Aconcagua is the highest peak in South America, this concert is considered a peak in the work of maestro Piazzolla.

"Combining familiar melodies from classical music with Argentine tango and the magical music of Astor Piazzolla, this concert promises to take you on a unique journey through the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires," reveals the philosophy of the musical project by Stoyan Karaivanov, who will present Piazzolla's pieces with mastery, taste, passion and personal charisma, together with the orchestra of the Burgas Opera.
