20 april 2026 "The Barber of Seville" Fills the Opera House with Excitement

A series of comic moments, dynamic stage action, cheerful emotions, modern satire presented in a fun way, a tangible artistic bond of everyone on stage await the audience on April 21 at 7 p.m. on the stage of the State Opera - Burgas in the performance of "The Barber of Seville" by Gioacchino Rossini. On Tuesday, magnificent artists will reincarnate in fresh roles in one of the most entertaining productions of the Burgas Opera - with an intelligent sense of humor, personal charm and gushing energy. The roles of the coquette Rosina and the most famous barber in the opera world - Figaro, are played by the laureates of the Stoyan Popov International Opera Competition 2025, Maria Yurkovskaya and Andrey Yurkovsky.
The production by Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev from 2021. is played on stage - with different artists, but with the unchanged charge embedded in the director's ideas and techniques. The performance, saturated with originality and an innovative approach in the treatment of eternal themes, infects the singers with the intelligent sense of humor and the contemporary sound of the plot, which carries a tease, but also has a flavor of current satire.
Andrey and Maria Yurkovski enter the roles for the fourth time and are already performing more convincingly and more emotionally. Their stage presence is supported by undeniable vocal mastery and mastery of the voice in the performance of complex bel canto arias, duets, and ensembles. The tenor Nikolay Motsov /guest/, who sang at the premiere in 2021, as well as in almost all performances of the production on the Burgas stage, is also brilliant and impressive with his "taming" of virtuoso passages. With characteristic humor, individual style, amusing and at the same time professionally sustained, is the construction of the comic image of Doctor Bartolo, by the bass Kostadin Mechkov, whose emotional desires are towards the beautiful young Rosina, but his attempts to impress her are grotesque. Impressive, as a vocal performance, and extremely funny, as the construction of the image of Don Basilio, with the humorous artistic etudes characteristic of the director's decisions, is the bass Delyan Slavov. A real pleasure on stage - both for the audience and for Nona Krastnikova herself, soprano, is her impressive and crazy image of Bertha, which she saturates with intelligent presence and wonderful singing. Colorful and fresh is the baritone Yordan Hristozov, who takes on two roles - the musician Fiorello and the Officer, a strict guardian of order in Seville.
The orchestra, conducted by the inimitable Ivan Kozhuharov, who knows how to breathe life and meaningful expression into every note and phrase, brilliantly performs Rossini's complex score. The singers from the choir, conducted by Alexander Chepanov, are also impressive, as they have individual artistic tasks on stage, which are invariably performed brilliantly.
It is expected that tomorrow, April 21, the avant-garde production with elements of contemporary satire of "The Barber of Seville" will again be presented in its entire brilliant form, which not only entertains but also provokes reflection on several infirmities in society.
More than four years after the brilliant premiere /on October 8, 2021/, the new staging of Rossini's masterpiece "The Barber of Seville" directed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Tekeliev, skillfully combined with the original scenographic and costume design solutions of Denis Ivanov, continues to be a hit - with the ever-current themes, dizzying directorial techniques, avant-garde appearance, whirlwind artistic presence, a pinch of eroticism and guaranteed smiles. The updated version of the opera continues to prove that the challenge of the new approach is accepted with understanding and is a sure way to get out of the comfort zone, to broaden one's horizons, and enrich perceptions. The artists manage to build a complete theatrical image of the performance, adding to the brilliant vocal performance a sense of all the ideas embedded in the staging solutions of Prof. Tekeliev. "The Barber of Seville" on the Burgas stage is not only an opera - in its classical form - although nothing from Rossini's musical score has been changed, but a wonderful complex spectacle is obtained, bringing not only wild laughter, but also many messages in the contemporary life context.
The assistant directors Petar Tiholov and Lina Peeva, the concertmaster of the orchestra Vanya Zlateva, the pianist Iliana Todorova, who performs the piano recitatives during the performance and prepares the performers for the brilliant sculpting of the parts on stage, the author of the subtitles - Srebrina Slavova, the specialists from the technical services and all those who are outside the light of the stage spotlights, but with their work contribute to the overall well-maintained appearance of "The Barber of Seville".
The performance is not recommended for persons under 12 years of age!
